ProCentury Insurance Company, a member of Meadowbrook Companies, is rated A- (Excellent) VIII by AM Best. While, ProCentury has been writing lawyers professional liability insurance in California since 2008, its parent company, Meadowbrook, has been in the lawyers liability insurance business for decades.

The ProCentury policy form has a number of unique features that make it an attractive option for California lawyers and law firms. Consider the following:

  1. A broad definition of covered "Legal Services" including in addition to services rendered as an attorney those performed in the following capacities:
    • Member, officer or director of a bar association, ethics, peer review, formal accreditation, or other similar board or committee;
    • Fiduciary, i.e., administrator, conservator, receiver, executor, guardian, guardian ad litem or trustee;
    • Arbitrator, mediator or hearing representative;
    • Presenter or author of legal research papers; and
    • Notary Public.
  2. A broad definition of covered "Predecessor Firms" which includes any sole practitioner who becomes an Insured and whose financial assets and liabilities have been assumed by the Named Insured;
  3. A broad definition of covered "Personal Injury" which includes abuse of process and malicious prosecution;
  4. Free retirement tail for individual attorneys in the firm who have been insured with ProCentury for at least 3 years and are at least 55 years of age;
  5. Free disability tail for individual attorneys in the firm who have been insured with ProCentury for at least 3 years and and become totally and permanently disabled;
  6. A 50% reduction in the applicable per claim deductible for claims resolved by mediation or arbitration, subject to certain specified caps;
  7. Up to 10% ownership allowance as an exception to the outside interests exclusion; and
  8. Up to $100,000 for the defense of alleged intentional torts.
